You Two and other cloning stories
Well finally the journalists are getting it right. Kudos for the bold headlines like yesterday's NYT, "South Koreans Streamline Cloning of Human Embryos". For years I have beenstaying on message that the embryoninc stem cell debate is really a human cloning story. I still remember doing an interview right after President Bush gave his famous "our children are creations not commodities" speech, when he limited the federal funding on embryonic stem cell research (which by the way, the U.S. policy on embryonic stem cell research mirrors the policy in Germany). While doing this interview, I started speaking about human cloning. The journalist stopped me and said embryonic stem cell research has nothing to do with human cloning and science would NEVER be able to clone humans! Fast forward to May 2005. Cloning is on the fast track, and William Saletan says that cloning technology is as reliable as In vitro fertilization technologies. Will this lead to the mass production of designer human embryos headed for destruction? History is in the making. How will this play out? The human future in on alert!
