Always surrounded by controversy, Craig Venter, "has built a synthetic chromosome out of laboratory chemicals and is poised to announce the creation of the first new artificial life form on Earth."Read the full story in the Guardian.
No need for alarm though, as Venter has assured us that he has carried out an ethical review and "we feel that this is good science" . . . phew! I was getting a little worried. Oh and one more thing, he's applied for a patent for the synthetic bacterium. So his good ethical science could also make him good and rich. Smells rather stinky to me.
